Asafoetida – Hingu (Perunkayam)
Botanical name – Ferula asafoetida
Distribution – Plains of Kandahar, Afghanistan, eastern Persia, and Western Afghanistan, Iran, Baltisan etc
Hingu is obtained as an exudate from the 4yrs old plant root. There are 2 varieties of asafoetida 1).Red 2).Brown
Major chemical constituents – Asafoetidin, ferocolicin
Ayurveda properties –
Rasa (taste) – Katu (Pungent)
Guna (properties) – Laghu (light), Snigdha (Unctuous), Tikshna (sharp)
Virya (potency) – Usna (Hot)
Vipaka (during digestion) – Katu (pungent)
Karma (action) – Kapha – vata hara (pacifies Kapha and vata) ,
hrdya (good for heart),
Artavajanana (Stimulate menstruation)
Sula hara (Pacifies colic pain)
Caksusya (Nourish eyes)
Bhedaniya (Separates toxins or fat from the body)
Anulomaniya (Moves the air downwards in the body)
Balya ( Strengthen the body)
Teeth worm – asafoetida is used to fill the dental caries.
Alcoholic addiction – Asafoetida is mixed with Sauvarchala lavana (black salt) and pepper and given with alcohol to cure alcoholism.
Colic pain in babies – apply a pinch of asafoetida powder mixed with water on the umbilical area will give a instant relief from colic pain in babies.
